Whether you are learning the art of fly fishing or honing existing casting skills, it doesn’t get any better than that!
Joe Humphreys and Ed Shenk have taught the fly fishing school at Allenberry Resort for over thirty years. Both are internationally recognized fly fishing instructors, authors of books and DVDs, and fly tiers.
Weekend package includes the following amenities:
- Hands-on fly fishing instruction by Joe Humphreys and Ed Shenk at the meadow and on the stream
- Two nights lodging at the beautiful Allenberry Resort located directly on the Yellow Breeches Creek
- All meals including breakfast (don’t forget to taste Allenberry’s famous sticky buns)
- Lunch and dinner with your fellow fly fishers, guests and instructors
- All taxes and gratuities
The fly fishing instruction includes the following:
- DVD presentations on casting and entomology
- Daily visits to the Yellow Breeches Creek with stream and habitat analysis and casting instruction
- Casting at the meadow to perfect the basic casts and roll casting with individual assistance by Joe and Ed
- Perfection of the basic knots: nail knot, blood knot, surgeons’ knot and double clinch knot and leader construction
- On stream dry fly, streamer and nymphing techniques
- ACTUAL FISHING AND CATCHING
Non-fishing guests are most certainly welcome, and there are a variety of other activities at the Allenberry Resort including swimming and tennis. Allenberry also has a recognized summer stock theater.

You know I took Alec to Joe's fly fishing school as a "grandmother/grandson"
getaway. Even though I don't fish, Alec loves it, and wanted to learn how
to fly fish. It met all my expectations, and then some. Joe couldn't have
been more helpful. He took Alec under his wings, and taught him everything
he needed to know to get started. That smile on Alec's face, when he caught
his first fish, is an image I'll never forget. It's funny that you wrote
yesterday, because I talked to the operator at Allenberry yesterday to
purchase a gift certificate for Alec's Christmas stocking for next year's
fly fishing school. We'll definitely be back next year.
I've enjoyed Allenberry's facilities many times through the years. I've stayed in the Meadow Lodge, enjoyed the buffet and have been to several shows in their playhouse. But, this is the first time I sat on the banks of the Yellow Breech's, walked the grounds, and really enjoyed the beauty of Mother Nature @ Allenberry. I was impressed.
I asked Alec about the school and Allenberry, and this is what he said, "It was awesome. Joe taught me everything I need to know about fly fishing. I caught my first brown trout in the Yellow Breech's. I'll definitely be back next year to practice the techniques I learned. Allenberry's cabins were really nice, the grounds were beautiful and the food was great."

It is first-class instruction, taught by two of the finest fly fishermen in the history of the sport. Beyond simply their mastery of fishing, what makes this school taught by Joe Humphreys and Ed Shenk truly invaluable is the approach they take to teaching: mixing in laughter with lesson by constantly telling stories and getting fly fishermen of all levels of experience truly engaged in the tasks. We were both most surprised at how quickly people can bond over learning together. One of the best things about the program is that it feels more like a family than a program. Both Rachael and I had a great time the entire weekend and we would highly recommend it to anyone.
