Although the classification is not a focus of species conservation, it does require adequate information on the current status of the species. Several factors have to be taken into account before determining the risk of extinction.

Since 2001, the IUCN has used the abbreviation “LC” for the least concern category. Prior to that, the classification was known as “Lower Risk,” a subcategory of the Lower Risk category. As of 2006, the IUCN Red List assigns the “least concern” category to 15636 taxa.
